The Purpose Trap: Why Meaning is a Choice, Not a Destination

We’ve been sold a story that "Purpose" is a singular, shimmering prize waiting for us at the end of a long, spiritual scavenger hunt. We’re told that if we just think hard enough, we’ll uncover that one overarching "Reason Why We’re Here."And sure, for a very small group of people—the "Monotasks"—that’s exactly how life works. There are individuals who feel a singular pull toward one thing from day one and dedicate every waking hour to it. That’s a remarkable way to live, but it isn’t the only way to have a meaningful life. For the rest of us, purpose isn't a single North Star. It’s a dynamic, living ecosystem made of seasons and overlapping layers.

The Friction of Hollow Living

The reason many of us feel restless isn't actually a lack of things to do. Most of us are incredibly busy. The ache comes when we spend our time doing things that have no meaning to us. When your daily actions don't align with your internal values, you feel a sense of friction. This is the "Purpose Gap"—the space between what you are doing and what you actually care about. If you feel like you’re missing out on the "real" thing you should be doing, it’s usually because your energy is being drained by tasks that don't resonate with your soul. Contentment isn't found in a grand epiphany; it’s found in alignment.

The Seasons and the Layers

If we stop searching for the "Big Why," we can see that we are actually standing in the middle of multiple, vital purposes right now. Think of your life as a series of layers:Stewardship: Caring for your body so you have the energy to live.Nurturing: Being the anchor for children, aging parents, or pets.Contribution: The value you create at work or the way you show up for your community. The key to feeling content is ensuring these layers hold value for who you are. When you lean into work that feels important to your spirit, you aren't just "getting through the day." You are living your purpose in real-time.

The Spotlight: What Have You Shelved?

While we honor these daily layers, we also have to be honest with ourselves. Sometimes, the restlessness we feel isn't because we lack layers, but because there is one big thing we’ve been shelving for years.Maybe it’s a creative project, a career shift, or a dream you’ve tucked away because "the timing wasn't right" or because your other layers felt too heavy. If that one thing is still whispering to you, maybe this is the season to turn a spotlight on it. It doesn't mean you have to abandon your other purposes, but it does mean you give yourself permission to bring that shelved dream into the light. Purpose is often found in the courage to finally acknowledge what you’ve been ignoring.

The Neuroscience of Joyful Determination

Why does this alignment change how we feel? Because our brains are wired for agency. When you do something you perceive as valuable, your brain engages the prefrontal cortex—the seat of intentionality. By choosing to focus on values that matter to you, you are "priming" your brain to notice opportunities for contribution and joy. This shifts your chemistry from a state of stress (cortisol) to a state of determination (dopamine). When you see the value in what you are doing—even in the quietest, most mundane layers of your life—your brain rewards you with a sense of presence.

Meaning is a DIY Project

I’m not sure there is one big, universal "Meaning of Life." But I am certain that your life can have infinite meaning. Meaning is a DIY project. It’s a spiritual and practical alignment of your actions with your values. It’s the quiet, fierce determination to wake up and say: "These are my layers today. This work has value to me, and that is enough."And if you’re in a place where you don’t feel that purpose yet? If everything feels heavy or flat? Don't panic. That feeling isn't a permanent state; it's a signal. It's your heart telling you that the current layers aren't fitting right. Your purpose in this moment is simply to be curious—to look at your life with compassion and ask what small spark might make tomorrow feel a little more valuable. Is there a "shelved" dream that has been nudging you lately, or are you currently finding your rhythm in the balance of your daily layers?

Have a beautiful day, Kate 🪷
