The Radical Act of a Cup of Tea in the Sunshine
If you were to peek back into my archives from when I first started this journey - back to those very first podcasts and newsletters - you’d find a phrase that has become a bit of a North Star for me: A cup of tea in the sunshine.
I’ve been holding that phrase close to my heart lately.
I recently went on a yoga retreat with my friend of thirty-five years. It was one of those rare, expansive weekends where the air feels clearer and the clock seems to stop. But as we sat together, reflecting on our lives, a familiar truth bubbled up. Despite building a business specifically designed to escape the "grind," I had accidentally invited the grind back in. I’d fallen into that old, sticky trap of thinking that if I wasn't striving, I wasn't doing enough.
Maybe you’ve felt that too? That subtle, heavy pressure to keep moving, even when your soul is whispering for you to sit down.
I’m returning to this message today because I need the reminder as much as you do: The simple joys are not a distraction from the work. They ARE the work.
Why Your Brain Craves the Pause
It’s so easy to dismiss a ten-minute break as "fluffy" or a luxury we’ll get to after the to-do list is finished. But your brain sees it differently.
Most of us spend our days in Sympathetic Activation. You might know it as that low-grade hum of "go, go, go." It’s the tight jaw while you’re answering emails and the mental tabs that never seem to close. In this state, your body is effectively running a marathon it never signed up for. Your nervous system is primed for a threat, leaving you feeling brittle, overwhelmed, and stuck in "survival mode."
When you step outside, feel the crisp Autumn air (or the warmth of the sun) on your skin, and wrap your hands around a warm mug, something magical happens.
You send a literal "safety signal" to your brain. You invite your nervous system to shift into what we call Ventral Vagal tone. This is the space of "Rest and Connect." It’s where your heart rate slows, your shoulders drop an inch, and your body finally breathes a sigh of relief.
Essential Brain Maintenance (Not a Luxury!)
When we allow ourselves those ten minutes of "being" rather than "doing," we aren't being lazy. We are performing essential maintenance. In this soft, spacious state:
Your perspective widens: The problem that felt like a mountain this morning suddenly looks less daunting.
Creativity sparks: New ideas don't grow in crowded calendars; they grow in the quiet gaps between tasks.
You come home to yourself: You move from "autopilot" back into the driver’s seat of your own life.
Returning to the Basics
I’m simplifying things—not because I’m doing less, but because I want to do what matters with more heart. I’m moving toward a way of working that feels like a deep exhale. This is why I’m shifting my newsletters to once a fortnight and why I’ve poured my energy into the Elemental Journey modules - creating a way for us to walk through change together without the pressure of doing it all at once.
So, I’m leading by example. I’m cutting back my newsletters to once a fortnight to protect my own spaciousness. I’m leaning back into the things that make life worth living: eating fresh food, listening to great music, connecting with nature and prioritisng the people I love.
I want to show you that success doesn't have to feel like a struggle. It can feel like flow.
A Tiny Invitation for You
This week, I’m giving you a permission slip (and I’m taking one for myself, too).
Don’t wait for the "right time" or for the house to be perfectly quiet. Find ten minutes today. Make the tea. Find that patch of light on the porch or by the window.
As you sit there, know that you aren’t "wasting time." You are rewiring your brain for joy. You are nurturing your life from the inside out. Because, if we don't take the time to pay attention to these small, sweet moments... are we actually living our lives at all?
With so much warmth to you all,
Kate x
